This lecture will cover a brief overview of criminal law and its origins. By the end of this lecture students should be able to: 1. List the four written sources of American criminal law. 2. Explain the two basic functions of criminal law. 3. Discuss the primary goals of civil law and criminal law and explain how these goals are realized. 4. Explain how the doctrine of strict liability applies to criminal law. 5. List and briefly define the most important excuse defenses for crimes. 6. Discuss a common misperception concerning the insanity defense in the United States. 7. Describe the four most important justification criminal defenses. 8. Explain the importance of the due process clause in the criminal justice system. 9. Describe the three ways that victims' rights legislation increases the ability of crime victims to participate in the criminal justice system.
