In this free tennis lesson, coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will share with you the 10 tennis commandments for tennis players. Work on all ten and see if you can make them a habit that will hold up in matches. These ten rules work for both singles and doubles. Ten Tennis Commandments: 1. Track the ball at all times. The most important element in tennis, but overlooked and neglected by many tennis players. If you watch the ball properly in tennis, you'll react quicker to the opponents shot, you'll get in position quicker and you'll hit the ball much cleaner. 2. Breathing properly when playing tennis. Once again, a fundamental of the game but often forgetting about by many tennis players. Try to exhale prior to and during the contact zone and inhale as you prepare for the shot. By doing this, you'll be relaxed as you make contact and you'll have more energy, for longer. 3. Split-step every time the opponent makes contact. A split-step is a little jump step, which allows you to be balanced and prepares you to move in any direction. If timed correctly, a split-step will help you push off the court explosively and make you a much faster tennis player. 4. Early preparation. As early as possible, start the swing on either your forehand or backhand by coiling the upper body. This will engage the trunk muscles, will aid you in the swing and will create time on the ball. 5. Complete the swing. Too often, players rush to finish their swing. This causes them to lose control of the shot or lose power. A complete follow-through and finish will set you up nicely and relax the muscles in the best way possible, to help avoid injuries. 6. Maximum height on the tennis serve. When serving, try to make contact at the maximum height possible, whatever that may be for your height and leg drive abilities. The higher we make contact on the serve, the more angles open up and the easier it is for us to clear the net. 7. Return inside the triangle. Imagine a triangle is created between your body and the two net posts when getting ready to return. Try to make contact inside the triangle which will help you reduce your backswing and go forward to cut off the angle. 8. Volley in front. When at the net, the biggest issue tennis players face is they make contact late. To solve this, try to make contact out in front, using a simple rule. The initial step you do with your swing will be to go forward with the racket, as if you were going to catch a tennis ball. By going firstly, you will ensure the racket is set to make contact in front of your body. 9. Find a way to win. During a match, you may have to try five or six different tactics until you find a way to win points on a consistent basis. This is normal and is to be expected. There is always a way to win the match, and it's your job to find it. 10. Have fun playing tennis. Try to remember, it is a game and we all play for different reasons, but have fun doing so.
