An Interview with Dr. Zachariah George, M.D.

Zachariah M. George, M.D., is a board-certified neurosurgeon at Neurological Surgery P.C. in Commack and West Islip, Long Island, NY. Dr. George has additional fellowship training in orthopedic spinal surgery. He specializes in minimally invasive and complex spinal surgery. He takes a special interest in revision spinal surgery and often is able to provide minimally invasive solutions for revision spinal cases. “I was just hoping for relief and to get some of my leg strength back. I got so much more. The results of the injections exceeded my expectations.” – Larry Monaco With special training in orthopedic spine deformity, Dr. George treats pediatric and adult deformities such as scoliosis and kyphosis. The Long Island neurosurgeon’s extensive experience and training allow him to skillfully treat the breadth of spinal problems from a simple disc to complex intradural tumors. Dr. George did his Neurosurgical training at The Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. He did his fellowship training at the Beth Israel Medical Center, also in New York. Dr. George’s Long Island neurosurgery group sees a high volume of patients. As a result, he and his fellow neurosurgeons have extensive experience treating both common and rare neurological diseases with the latest minimally invasive techniques. Dr. George uses cervical laminoplasty, total disc arthroplasty (disc replacement) and dynamic stabilization techniques as alternatives to spinal fusion. The Long Island neurosurgeon employs the latest technology in spinal interbody fusion using traditional anterior and posterior approaches as well as cutting edge lateral transpsoas approaches. Dr. George is very passionate about minimally invasive techniques and uses tubular retraction systems to treat herniated discs, degenerative spinal disease and spinal tumors. Compared to open surgery, minimally invasive surgery results in very small incisions, faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. Dr. George emphasizes that surgery isn’t the only treatment option for patients who consult with him. “We can often suggest effective alternatives to surgery,” he continues, “such as pain management injections, medication, chiropractic, physical therapy, and even acupuncture. There is a place for these alternatives in neurological patient care.” In most routine cases these non-surgical options are attempted before considering any surgical treatment. “When patients come to my office,” Dr. George says, “they will be seen in a timely fashion and treated with warmth and compassion. We respect the fact that they may be in pain and anxious about their diagnosis.” Learn more at https://www.nspc.com/physician/zachar...
