As his campaign progressed in the north, Lee decided to divide his army to reduce the strategically vital federal garrison of Harpers Ferry. But as his dispatches were sent out to all the detachments, one copy was soon lost and found by some federal soldiers who followed the path of the invading Confederate army. Once the surprising find reached the hands of McClellan, the commanding general discovered the whereabouts of enticing isolated elements of Lee's army. To capitalize on this turn of events, McClellan aggressively marched upon the isolated elements of the Army of Northern Virginia. Upon hearing the rapid ascent of McClellan's federals, Lee hastily patched together a force to defend the critical passes of South Mountain, hopefully, to stall their advance as Jackson and his detachment finished the vital siege of Harpers Ferry further south. While the Federals energetically march toward the enemy, D. H. Hill's men prepare themselves to receive the numerically superior foe. Only time and the strength of arms will tell, who will be victorious in the quiet foothills of South Mountain.
