The inaugural run of the 02627 Chennai Central -Nagercoil Vande Bharat Express took place on August 31, 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off this new train service via video conference. The Vande Bharat Express, which is a semi-high-speed train, will operate six days a week, excluding Wednesdays operating as 20627/20628. The journey from Chennai Egmore to Nagercoil covers 724 km and is completed in just under nine hours, with the train departing at 5:00 AM and arriving at 1:50 PM. The return journey starts at 2:20 PM from Nagercoil, reaching Chennai Egmore by 11:00 PM with stops at the following stations: Tambaram, Villupuram, Tiruchirappalli, Dindigul, Madurai, Kovilpatti, Tirunelveli. This Vande Bharat rake also includes the 75000th coach ever produced by ICF, which is the highest number of coaches produced by a single rail coach manufacturing plant. This new service is expected to provide a more comfortable and faster alternative for travelers on this route, with fares for a chair car class ticket ranging from ₹1,650 to ₹1,700. The cost for traveling in the Executive Chair Car on the Chennai Egmore-Nagercoil Vande Bharat Express is approximately ₹3,000. This fare provides passengers with a premium travel experience, offering more comfort and additional amenities compared to the standard Chair Car. In addition to the Chennai-Nagercoil route, two other Vande Bharat Express trains were also inaugurated on the same day, including a service between Madurai and Bengaluru.
