I tiled this big travertine floor in 2009, over 11 years ago. This was an outdoor living area that was mostly covered but some parts of the floor were exposed to the elements. Travertine is a soft stone which is prone to cracks, scratching, and pitting. But in this instance, the floor held up great and stood the test of time. Watch as I explain the methods I used, and why they worked so well on this floor to avoid a fail. Travertine can be a great option for a floor if it is sealed properly and maintained well with the correct cleaners. Travertine can become scratched, but since it is a soft stone it can be polished or honed to get rid of the scratches. There are many restoration companies that specialize in travertine and marble restoration. The reason the homeowner wanted to replace it was not because it was failing, but because it was too slippery when it got wet. Travertine can be slippery when wet. We used a medium bed mortar, along with drypack deck mud mortar to achieve a minimum lippage flat floor. This insured full coverage under the tiles so there were no cracking or loose, broken tiles. We also used a crack isolation membrane that helped prevent cracks and loose tiles. Leave your comments in the section below and find me on instagram @tilecoach.
