Prakash Raj essays the role of Vengadam the best silk weaver in the small town of Kanchivaram in Tamil nadu. He pledges that he would give his daughter a silk saree on her marriage. His pledge becomes the talk of the town as it was impossible for a weaver to afford an expensive saree like Kanchivaram in the pre independence era. Vegandam saves money for the purpose but his brother-in-law ruins his plans. Then to keep his promose Vegandam starts stealing silk strands from his work place. At the same time he also leads a strike to demand a pay hike for weavers. Will Vegandam be able to balance his social, professional and domestic life without compromising on his ideals. Prakash Raj had won the 'National Award for Best Actor' for his performance in this film.
