Game is obviously over, so Austin Rivers just needs to dribble it out. But he notices the clock differential, and when the shot clock expires, that’s a turnover. So right at the end, he passes this hot potato to Ben Maclemore, who is well aware of what’s going on, and immediately passes it to Chris Clemons, who doesn’t even want to touch it. I made a video about this last year, but it keeps happening. So let’s go through it again. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. Here’s the same situation just with the Cavaliers. The rookie Darius Garland dribbles out the clock, but at the end passes it to Sexton, who immediately passes it to Kevin Love. And this isn’t anything new guys, I talked about this last season and I said that I hate the fact that players nowadays are so worried with their individual stats, that they will do things that are borderline unintelligent. Like getting rid of the ball at the end of games or waiting for the quarter to expire before they take a long shot so that their percentages don’t suffer and similar things like that. I’ll link that video in the description. But focusing on the hot potato issue, the funniest thing is that a shot clock violation is not even registered as a player turnover, but rather as a team turnover. So the guy with the ball won’t even have it counted in his boxscore. But you know that’s what the constant thought about the numbers and individual statistics would do to a player. It causes irrational fears like this one. I’m just surprised- considering how widespread this is throughout the NBA, why is the league or the teams themselves not reaching out to the players to let them know that this is not a thing that they should worry about. And players worry because, with all the focus on analytics and numbers and efficiency, teams are looking at every aspect of a guy that they want to sign. All the numbers and percentages. So obviously there are some players who want to maximize their value and the money that they could get, by trying all kinds of tricks to make their boxscores look better. But this is not the way to go. Interestingly enough, The one opposite reaction came from the Clippers rookie Kabengele who, look at how he notices, he’s well aware of the whole situation and actually offers to take the ball from the point guard, as the turnovers are much less impactful and looked at with big men, as opposed to playmakers. Again I need to stress that shot clock turnovers do not count against any particular player. They go as team turnovers. But not knowing that, it’s good to see a player offer to help out his teammate. Anyway, NBA please let the players know that they shouldn’t be making a circus show at the end of games, and that there’s nothing to be afraid of. This is not affecting them.
