Construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge began in 1955, taking four years with the bridge officially opening in 1959. In this “home-movie” digitised from the original 8mm Kodachrome safety cinefilm reel, hobby filmmaker Edgar Steer captures the construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge over the Waitematā Harbour. Capturing key stages in the bridge’s construction, from the Pick-a-back operation of moving the 580-foot bridge span to its position, to the completed bridge with tool booths being finished. This film captures the construction and engineering of one of Aotearoa’s most famous infrastructures. As well as showcasing how New Zealanders have used film and video to capture moments of day-to-day life throughout our history.
