This was written for Day 24 of Ryan Leach's "2022 Theme of the Day Challenge" where I'll compose one piece per day for the entirety of June, though it ended up with me somehow managing to speed compose this along with like 8 other prompts in a row on the final day of the challenge. The prompt for June 24th was "Academia". I did a very simple and rather crude melody as a theme, representing a student just entering without too much knowledge. It is followed by a few variations that gradually increase in difficulty, sort of like a metaphor for how one learns and becomes better from education at school. The first variation uses a slight embellishment of the melodic line and harmony, while Variation 2 uses the march-like fragment of the theme and descending fifths sequence with modal mixture (parallel minor). The shift into Variation 3 is a bVI modulation (Ab-E Major) through the common tone of Ab-G#, as well as a meter change of 4/4 into 6/8, with the repeated note fragment and descending fifths sequence still present. The bVI modulation happens again, but this time with the E common tone between E and C major in order to get back to the original key of C. Finally, the fourth variation uses hints of the original theme's motifs and harmonic sequences in a rhythmic and virtuosic manner, ending in a jubilant celebration.
