Whistler Peak Open After 2 Days Avy Blasting | Pineapple Express on MLK Weekend - Bataleon Goliath

Pineapple Express as we call it here - more commonly known as a warm, wet high pressure system than occasionally rolls through town, has been causing havoc with the snow pack. It's MLK Day Weekend, holiday in the states, and the ski patrol has spent the last 2 days with Peak Chair on Whistler closed as the blast the hell out of it. Rain and wet snow at higher elevations meant high avalanche risk, and with the snow being so heavy, even a small slide could have serious repercussions. This morning it finally opened, so Brent, Caspian and I headed up to see how things are looking. None of the Alpine (Peak or Harmony) Chairs have been open, so we took a little tour of the alpine area to see how the snow is and what's the aftermath of the avalanche blasts and subsequent debris. Being a holiday Sunday this was the busiest day of the year, so a little less snowboarding and a bit more line waiting. Also riding the Bataleon Goliath for the first time: a twin powder board, which I can safely say was not made for this type of snow. There was about 4 inches of soft snow and then a soft crusty layer that collapsed quite easily. This seemed perfect for grabbing the front of my board and dragging me down to eat some snow. Like all Bataleon has their 3D shapes base (3BT) and noticed it a little in the powder. Similar to feel from Jones Boards with their "spooned" out noses. Felt great on the groomers and carving, surprising to me, and I hope to get it out on some softer snow soon.
