The purpose of this California Interdisciplinary Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (CA-LEND) leadership project was to create an educational video for parents and service providers on supporting communication development with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in individuals with Rett Syndrome (RS). This project arose from an observed need at the Rett Syndrome interdisciplinary assessment clinic located at the USC University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), as we have come to realize that this is a highly underserved population, to a great extent due to misconceptions about RS, coupled with very limited knowledge of AAC applications for individuals with RS. This video includes current research on communication development in individuals with RS, education on AAC, parent-child input and examples of how to use AAC with a child with RS.
