BBMF MEMBERS DAY SPECIAL AVRO LANCASTER, T-6 HARVARD & TYPHOON DISPLAYS • RAF CONINGSBY 28..09.24

BBMF Members Day 2024 at Ted HQ with a double dose of PA474 Avro Lancaster, T-6 Harvard and the breathtaking Typhoon display by Turbo in the famous livery, "Moggy". Plans to build an airfield at Coningsby began in 1937 but the base was built a year after the Second World War, in 1940. The station was under the command of 5 group and the airfield was first constructed with grass runways. 5 Group was formed at RAF Mildenhall on the 1st September 1937 but later moved to Morton Hall, Swinderby, Lincolnshire. It was on the 4th November 1940 that RAF Coningsby opened and their first aircraft to operate on the airfield were Handley Page Hampden and Avro Manchester Bombers. In February 1941, 106 SQUADRON (markings: ZN) were the first residence of Coningsby and the following month went into combat with raids on Cologne. A month after the raids, 97 Squadron (Markings: OF) joined 106 squadron with the 2 engine powered Avro Manchesters. 106 Squadron later operated the Manchesters, which at the time had bad reputation for being unreliable with its underpowered two engines. In 1942, 106 Squadron was to have a new Wing Commander. Aged just 23, Wing Commander Guy Gibson took command of the Squadron. The moral was strongly boosted and with Guy Gibson as their Wing Commander, they awaited for their new four engined version of the Manchester, the Avro Lancaster. 97 Squadron became the second operational squadron to receive the Lancaster, the first was 44 squadron, based at RAF Waddington. In 1942, RAF Coningsby's aircraft took part in the 1000 Bomber raids over Cologne. When the base closed in 1942 to be resurfaced with hardened concrete runways, 617 "Dambusters" Squadron arrived and operated for a brief period in 1943. Further Lancaster squadrons arrived. 619 Squadron also operated out of Coningsby before moving to Dunholme Lodge. After the WW2, RAF Coningsby was operating a variety of aircraft over the next few decades. Mosquitos in 1946, the in 1950 the Boeing Washington (B-29) followed by Coningsby's first ever jet aircraft in 1953, the English Electric Canberra. In 1962, RAF Coningsby received the Vulcan Bombers but this was only to last just for two years. With the EE Canberra was replaced by the Phantom FGR2 in 1968 with squadrons 228 OCU, 41(F), 29(F), 23(F) and 56(F). In 1976, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight made Coningsby their home and the following year saw Coningsby's Phantom squadron leave for RAF Wattisham to take of a QRA role. Jaguars, Harriers and finally Tornado F3's made the base their new home. The Tornado F3 arrived in 1984 and in 2003, 17 Squadron, who were based at Warton, received the Typhoon, to become the first ever Typhoon squadron. In 2005, 17 squadron officially reformed at RAF Coningsby on19th May. 29 Squadron also arrived that year along with combat-ready 3(F) and XI(F) squadrons later on When we think of bomber aircraft of World War 2, many of us think of one bomber in particular, but there were other bombers that should never be forgotten, such as the Wellington, Stirling, B-17, Hampden, Blenheim, B-24, B-25 and Beaufort. The Avro Lancaster is the most famous and successful RAF heavy bomber of World War Two. Today, there are only two airworthy Lancasters left in the world of the 7,377 that were built. This is the BBMF (Battle of Britain Memorial Flight) Avro Lancaster PA474 based at RAF Coningsby. The Lancaster's first flight took off on the 9th January 1941 and entered operational service with delivery in September 1941. The final delivery was on the 2nd February 1946. Lancaster PA474 was built at the Vickers Armstrong Broughton factory at Hawarden Airfield, Chester on 31 May 1945, just after VE day. The war in the Far East ended before she was deployed and she did not take part in any hostilities. We are lucky enough to have the Avro Lancaster in the skies today as a flying tribute for the 55,573 men that died in bomber command... lest we forget... #typhoon #eurofighter #coningsby #rafconingsby #rafcareer #military #anarchy1 #runway #trending #raf #takeoff #fighterpilot #fighterjet #topgun #tedvideos #tedconingsby #bbmf #aviation #airports #livestream #livestreaming #oohyeah #skimthefence #jets #aircraft #moggy Official Ted Coningsby Merchandise https://tedconingsby.co.uk/shop/ noTEDS https://tedconingsby.co.uk/noteds/ Ted Social stuff Instagram   / ted_coningsby   Facebook   / tedconingsbyuk   X   / tedconingsby   www.tedconingsby.co.uk Ted Coningsby Membership: Join our channel to get access to members only perks.
