An Egoist Psychoanalysis and Critique of Hyper-Independence

Welcome to the first episode of the new series Egoist Psychoanalysis! In this series, I combine the insights of Max Stirner’s egoism with psychoanalytic theory to break down modern societal trends. Today’s video is about a popular cultural myth: hyper-independence and the "self-made" trope. From hustle culture to individualist success stories, we’re told that complete independence is the path to fulfillment. But is this really true, or is hyper-independence just another spook controlling us? Using Stirner’s philosophy, Freud and Lacan’s psychoanalysis, and Deleuze & Guattari’s critique of capitalism, we dissect the myth of the "self-made" individual and explore how it keeps us trapped in unrealistic expectations and isolation.
