I got bored, so I decided to see what's really in it for video quality from my Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VHS combo recorder. Here, the tape I used was a 2001 print of the VeggieTales episode The Ultimate Silly Song Countdown, because truth be told, my capture card can detect copy protection, but only properly through composite! Now to explain that, it's simple: Macrovision was intended to exploit the way Composite video worked by sending pulses through the output, which can be properly detected via Composite. Since Component does not work that way, it can pass through copy protected video, with one caveat with my setup; weird lines at the very top, but it's a price to pay if you want to do tape openings with that kind of setup. PLEASE watch at 1080p60, otherwise you won't really be able to tell much in the video outside of color differences.
