Second phase of crackdown on child marriages begins in Assam, over 1,000 arrested

October 3 in Assam began with the second phase of crackdown on child marriages in the state. The crackdown began early on Tuesday with over 1,000 people being arrested from several districts across the state. Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma also took to Twitter to share, “In a massive crackdown against child marriage, Assam Police has arrested over 800 accused persons in a special operation which began in the early hours of dawn”. He also updated the number to be over 1000 later in the day. Meanwhile, the situation turned tense after several women gathered outside Golakganj police station in Dhubri demanding the release of their relatives. A woman fell also unconscious after her husband was arrested. She was then rushed to Golakganj Hospital. The arrests come days after Sarma announced that close to 4,000 people were arrested in cases related to child marriages in the last five years, of whom 3,319 are facing charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The drive was first launched in February leading to the arrest of close to 3,000 people.
