Louis Anquetin (1861-1932) | Paris Fin de Siècle

Louis Anquetin was a French Post-Impressionist painter. Born in 1861, Anquetin grew up in Rouen, before moving to Paris in 1882 at the age of 21. Here he studied under Léon Bonnat and met Henri Toulouse-Lautrec in his studio. Like Toulouse-Lautrec, Anquetin’s early work focuses on scenes of contemporary Parisian life. At the bar, at the races, at the Moulin Rouge. He later moved to the studio of Fernand Cormon, there befriending van Gogh and Émile Bernard. With Bernard, Anquetin developed the style of Cloisonnism using strong black lines enclosing bold colours. This would go on to influence Gauguin and Les Nabis among others. Anquetin changed his style from the 1890s to focus on the old masters, particularly Rubens, about whom he later published a book. Most of his well known work comes from the period of the late 1880s and early 1890s.
