SVD @ 149

149 years ago, on 8th September 1875, St. Arnold Janssen inaugurated St. Michael Mission House in Steyl, Holland. And thus, begun the Society of the Divine Word, also known as Divine Word Missionaries. It was no coincidence that the feast of the nativity of our Blessed Mother and the inauguration of the 1st SVD mission house would fall on the same day. For St. Arnold, there would be no other day better than September 8 considering Mary’s important role in bringing forth the Divine Word incarnate. From the SVD Constitutions number 406, “She is our model of faithful attentiveness and ready response to God’s word; she will help us to bring the Divine Word to others.” For these were difficult times for the Catholic Church in Germany. Otto von Bismarck launched the Kukturkampf with a series of anti-Catholic laws that led to the expulsion, imprisonment and death of those who opposed, particularly Catholic priests and bishops. It was in the midst of this chaotic situation when everything seemed collapsing in the Church of Germany that St. Arnold started a missionary congregation. He was perceived to be insane, that what he started would fail. Yet he remained focused to what God wanted from him. St. Arnold tells us, “It is not me but the Lord…The Lord challenges our faith to do something new, precisely when so many things are collapsing in the Church.” In the same way, we see such faith and obedience from the Blessed Virgin Mary when she was told by Angel Gabriel that she has found favor in God and that she will give birth to a son – Jesus, the Divine Word made flesh. “Let it be done to me according to your word.” (Lk 1:28-38) Perhaps, it was Mary’s faith and obedience that inspired St. Arnold to carry out what to many seemed insane and impossible. So it happened that on 8th September 1875, the SVD was born. This 8th September 2024, as we celebrate 149 years of God’s immense grace to the SVD and in joyful anticipation of SVD @ 150 in 2025, like St. Arnold, let us continue to be inspired by the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary. One may say, these are difficult times. One could be overwhelmed by the challenges surrounding our missionary endeavors. Like St. Arnold, may we remain focused to the giver of the Mission whose grace upon us is overflowing. So, we could also say “It is not me but the Lord. And like Mary, may our trust and faith to God be complete so we could also say, “Let it be done to me according to your word.
