Efteling is a fairy-tale amusement park in Holland. It’s all about fairy-tales, fables and folklore and has been around since 1952. We went there in Autumn, so it was a much quieter season than the height of summer. Which is just as well. Apparently it gets more annual visitors than Disneyland Paris. The whole park is kind of like wandering through a fairy-tale forest (although there is a specific fairy-tale forest in the park). All the buildings are a similar theme, and there are various stories and characters from folklore in the area. Most of the story-based rides are in Dutch, with just enough English to keep our foreign kids interested! It has a very good collection of thrilling roller coaster rides as well. We spent a good 7 hours there, staying to watch the final light and water show. Our favourite ride was Symbolica where you get taken around in an automated buggy, through an elaborately decorated castle. Another highlight is the various characters (waste paper bins) around the park that suck up your rubbish and then thank you in Dutch. It’s worth a trip if you have some time in the Netherlands, and it’s just over an hour from Amsterdam.
