Finding Tejas: The Archeology of the First Location of Mission Concepción and Its Associated Sites

Before being moved to San Antonio, Mission Concepción was originally founded in 1716 in the Hainai village, referred to by the Spanish as the "capital of the Tejas." The site was discovered not far from the Angelina River in 2010. This talk reviews the historical background of the French and Spanish interactions with the Caddo groups in East Texas, the discovery of the four archeological sites making up the Mission complex, and the recent work at a related colonial period French trading post not far away.
