"Holding On (When Love Is Gone) took shape after both writers were in the middle of divorces. Jeffrey Osborne states that the song came from that experience and it became a #1 R&B hit for two weeks in 1978. Co writer JT McGhee was also a band member, making this song the first #1 written by the band. He also worked with Marvin Gaye on his #1 hit "Got To Give It Up" and was a funky guitar player that Osborne wishes had written more songs with the band. In fact the song came as a guitar demo to Osborne who was able to complete a song from what he brought to the table. He mentions it was the hardest things he had ever done, but it was worth it. Osborne and his brother Billy (keyboards), McGhee (guitar) counted Henry Davis (bass), Lorenzo Carnegie (tenor, alto sax), Abraham Miller (tenor), Jake Riley (trombone) and Carl Vickers (trumpet, soprano sax) with MFSB's Bobby Martin producing.
