Today’s feature is a player that did everything he was supposed to at all ammeter levels to deserve being drafted in the NBA. It was a life long dream, that happened at 21 years old, when the Phoenix Suns took him with the 34th overall pick. For a guy listed at 5’9 in shoes when measured at the NBA combine, making him the second shortest player there after Kay Felder, and also just 149lbs, being the lightest players there by far, it’s amazing Tyler Ulis even made it to the NBA, seeing how much he had to physically fight against on his way there. But don’t feel too sorry for him because Tyler Ulis had game. For a smaller player he really didn’t play like it in high school nor in college. Sure his height affected him finishing at the rim at times, but anywhere else Ulis was near dominant considering we don’t usually see the trajectory and follow through he had. He was right at the door step of taking that same basketball favor into the NBA as well, before some of the things we’ll talk about today happened. What I liked most about Tyler Ulis is he never played like a 5’9 basketball player as far as style. His moves were ultra smooth and deceptively shifty, as his change of speed and direction in high school and college were second to none. No doubt if Ulis was anywhere from 6’3-6’5 he would’ve been a top 10 draft pick and likely be an all star in the league with a career still on going. Luckily he did enough to leave early and be drafted, but it didn’t happened the way he would’ve liked, and eventually it led to a second round pick, non guaranteed start, prior to him being out the league in 3 years at just 23 years old.
