Mary Pickford: Classic Film Star, Movie Mogul & America's Sweetheart

My family started Universal Studios, and I make videos about their work and legacy. Mary Pickford is one of the most famous actresses from he silent era, and she is SO much more than just a silent actress. As a child actress, she charmed her way onto Broadway, and soon found herself working with D.W. Griffith for $10 a week at Biograph Studios. She would take her talents to IMP (my Uncle Carl Laemmle's studio - even going down to Cuba for a while, as Uncle Carl and Thomas Edison were fighting each other!), then to the Majestic Film Company, and later co-found United Artists with Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith. Mary was married three times: first to Owen Moore, then to Douglas Fairbanks, and finally to Buddy Rogers. She and Douglas Fairbanks were the first high profile celebrity couple: they were the first stars to put their hand and footprints in Grauman's Chinese Theater, and often hosted parties and events at their beautiful Beverly Hills Mansion named Pickfair. She was very much seen as America's Sweetheart - not just for her public romances, but also for all of the good she did in the world! She travelled around the country promoting Liberty Bonds, created the Motion Picture Relief Fund to help those working in silent films as the industry transitioned to sound, she introduced the Payroll Pledge Program to help industry members during the Great Depression, and established the Mary Pickford Charitable Trust. Today, the Mary Pickford Charitable Trust still exists as the Mary Pickford Foundation, which preserves her film work and memory, and continues her charitable efforts as well.
