Helicopters truly are amazing machines! So lets talk about the unequal lift between the advancing and retreating halves of the rotor disk. (This will be tailored to a counterclockwise rotor system. Just flip it around for you European folks ;) ) The difference in lift would cause the helicopter to be uncontrollable in any situation other than hovering in calm wind. The upward and downward flapping motion vectorally changes the Induced Flow velocity. Thus changing the Angle of Attack on the advancing and retreating blades. As relative wind speed of the advancing blade increases, the blade gains lift and begins to flap up. This upward flap creates a downward flow of air and has the same effect as increasing the induced velocity by imposing a downward vertical velocity vector to the relative wind, which decreases the Angle of Attack (AOA). So the opposite is true on the retreating blade... Actually, ignore this, its actually magic that allows helicopters to fly! Enjoy the evening flight!
