Phish 1992: Capturing the Spirit of the Early '90s [Documentary]

This is by far the biggest project I have ever made, and my first feature documentary film. My love letter to 1992 Phish, and early '90s and small venue Phish in general. This project, that has been in the works since summer 2020, aims to combine the best of my highlights format, as well as documentary aspects. Unlike the 83-87 video, this one is overflowing with narrated excerpts and interview segments, which are all held together by top quality moments of improvisation and banter from the band. It went through periods of dedication and neglect, up until several months ago, when I decided to do some major heavy lifting in editing, and take inspiration from some of the video essays and documentaries I have seen in my time on Youtube. Now I am proud to finally unveil it to all of you! This year felt like it was when the band's potential finally *clicked*. They were able to take the experimentation and goofiness of the 80s, and the tightness of 90-91, and combine them. This year doesn't have a wealth of outstanding jams like 1993-99, but as a whole, it was an incredibly strong and crucial year for them developing their own unique sound. 0:00 Intro; A rundown of the year 7:05 Secret Language Instructions 3/13/92 Providence, RI 8:34 Messing with people tuning into a broadcast 9:23 Trey explains "screw with radio audience" flier - I Didn't Know 12/31/92 10:04 David Bowie 4/8/92 Albuquerque, NM (Fish, Shapiro, and Trey describe audience participation; I got to meet Kevin Shapiro at Mondegreen!!) 13:06 David Bowie 12/7/92 Minneapolis, MN (Paul Languedoc and Chris Kuroda talk about soundboard tapers) 14:50 Run Like a Big Black Furry Creature From Mars 3/13/92 Providence, RI 17:14 Antelope 12/12/92 Toronto, ON 17:36 Weekapaug Groove 3/20/92 - Binghamton, NY 19:09 Weekapaug Groove 5/14/92 Port Chester, NY (Paluska talks about the band's work ethic while touring) 19:35 Weekapaug Groove 12/5/92 Chicago, IL 20:14 A Picture of Nectar and Rift (Covering the band's strategy of playing all the albums songs before release, the concept of the album, and how fulfilling their lives on tour have been) 22:20 Bathtub Gin 4/18/92 Palo Alto, CA 22:36 The Lizards 11/25/92 Glenside, PA 23:49 My Sweet One 3/27/92 Charlotte, NC / Mound 3/13/92 (Paluska talks about how much of a wildcard the band was in the context of all other live music) 24:51 Trey on tape trading having a direct influence on keeping every single show fresh and innovative 25:22 Explaining the Colonel Forbin's Ascent - Fly Famous Mockingbird Narrations 26:27 Forbin/Mockingbird Narration 11/27/92 Port Chester, NY (Fish's head) 28:57 Trey explaining how cryptic Phish lore is for outsiders, but turns into an obsession once they understand 29:31 Forbin/Mockingbird Narration 12/4/92 St. Louis, MO (Deep sea) 31:57 Tweezer 4/21/92 Eureka, CA (Explaining the musical "Hose" coined by Carlos Santana, and the Tweezer that possibly acted as the grandfather for some of the most famous jams) 33:44 Somewhere Over the Rainbow 8/17/92 San Juan Capistrano, CA 33:57 Forbin/Mockingbird Narration 4/24/92 34:36 Yo Yo-Ma of Vacuum Cleaners - If I Only Had a Brain 12/12/92 Toronto, CA (rare interview with Fish in which he tells the origin story of playing the Electrolux vacuum cleaner) 35:31 Harry Hood "Yellowbrick Road" 3/14/92 NYC 36:04 Harry Hood 5/17/92 Schenectady, NY 36:25 You Enjoy Myself 12/28/92 New Haven, CT 37:18 You Enjoy Myself "Auld Lang Syne" 12/30/92 Springfield, MA 37:39 You Enjoy Myself "Davy Crockett" 12/12/92 Toronto, ON 38:01 Origin of the "H.O.R.D.E" tour 40:31 Santana - Blues for Salvador 7/31/92 Blossom, Cuyahoga Falls, OH (Trey sitting in with Santana, and explaining the influence Carlos had on the band) 41:41 You Enjoy Myself 8/29/92 Shoreline, Mountain View, CA (Paluska explains how the band would go from town to town, gauge the kind of crowd they had, and adapt how they needed to) 42:51 Possum 5/17/92 Schenectady, NY (ᵗʰᵉ ᵇᵉˢᵗ ᵖᵒˢˢᵘᵐ ᵉᵛᵉʳ ᵖˡᵃʸᵉᵈ) 45:00 Backstory of "Brother" - (5/6/92 Detroit, MI and 5/17/92 Schenectady, NY) 47:31 Tweezer 12/12/92 Toronto, ON (This is the first jam from early 1.0 that I really fell in love with, then I went on to make all the videos spanning from 1983 to 93! They might as well have recorded it in the same studio as the album). (Yes I know Smashing Pumpkins isn’t indie rock. I wrote the script before the clips, and happen to include 1979, which came out in 96, because it captured the 90s sound)
