Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a rapidly growing technology allowing for near net shape components to be created. This has a lot of potential in the fabrication of bespoke components and performance of repairs. AM technology has traditionally been process-led, with huge strides taken in improving the integrity, repeatability and speed of deposition. However, the performance of components is dependent on their microstructures, which in turn relies on their thermo-mechanical history. A greater knowledge and control of the microstructure, and its effects on properties, is therefore vital to allow for further uptake across industries. The presentation gives an overview of key characterisation techniques employed to investigate the microstructure of AM components. Case studies are utilised to show this in action, with a specific focus on work performed on Alloy 718, an important material of interest across several industrial sectors, including aerospace and oil and gas. Further, the effect of heat treatment on AM material, compared with conventional wrought material, is discussed. For further details, please contact [email protected]
