The voting process in the UK is called first past the post, and what this means is that constituents, people living in the constituencies, get to vote for one candidate. The candidate that then receives the most votes, becomes the MP. Twitter:   / thatswhytv   Facebook:   / thatswhytv   Every four or five years there is a general election in the UK, that elects 650 MPs to represent 650 constituencies in the House of Commons. Constituencies are geographical areas that are supposed to contain a similar amount of people in each, usually around 70,000. The voting process in the UK is called first past the post, and what this means is that constituents, people living in the constituencies, get to vote for one candidate. The candidate that then receives the most votes, becomes the MP Now this system of voting does receive criticism, as it often means the percentage of seats for a certain party does not reflect the percentage of votes, and it caters more to a two party democracy. However others argue that first past the post provides strong government as it makes coalitions less likely, and that it wards off extremism, as smaller extremist parties have less of a chance of winning seating. MPs are significant because without them, the Prime Minister cannot get anything done. He or she relies on a majority in parliament to pass laws and make decisions. In this sense we can see clearly how the UK is not a presidential system, we don’t vote for our prime minister, we give a party a mandate to govern through our vote and if we want to help them decide who their leader is, we can join the party.
