This video from The Honest Carpenter will show you how to replace individual deck stair treads, and it will also give you great tip on how to make deck treads stronger in the future! Loose deck stair treads are often a result of the deck stair tread overhanging the riser at the front. This causes a cantilever effect, where people's footfalls pry the board up over time. The best idea is to replace existing deck stair treads using a combination of glue and fasteners. Tool List: Large Screwdriver Pry Bar Circular Saw Tape Measure Hammer Speed Square Drill / Driver Caulking Gun Nail Puller Brad Nailer (optional) Materials: 5/4 Deck Board 2-1/2" Exterior Grade Screws Adhesive (PL Premium Loctite) Scrap Treated Wood 2" Brad Nails (optional) How-To Replace Deck Stair Treads: 1) Gently pry up old treads with a large screwdriver and hammer. 2) Remove old nails with a nail puller. Or, drive nails down in if broken. 3) Measure for replacement lumber 4) Cut replacement piece out of 5/4 deck board 5) Install new pieces using combination of screws and exterior grade construction adhesive. Attach front of tread into riser below (if riser present) 6) Support overhangs of more than 1" with a strip of treated scrap, preferably with a bevel on the underside.
