Chinatown & Japantown Glamor - October 11, 2024

n the 1920s and '30s, Hollywood glamour photography and sports action photography helped change what America watched and how we saw ourselves in the world. San Luis Obispo's Asian communities—with direct connections to the magazine and movie industries and sports stardom—soaked up these changes, reinvented themselves, and a few became national and international avatars for glamour. Historian James Papp explores the photography archives of the History Center and Cal Poly Special Collections to tell the story of Chinatown and Japantown's glamour photographers and models, from America's first Asian cover girl, Helen Wong Louis, to Masao "Lefty" Nishijima, the local star who helped spark Japan's love affair with baseball.
