Jesuita Cantat Series 2.0 VIII. Salve Regina from "Salut pour le jour du Saint Sacrement" - Louis Lambillotte (1797-1855) For the third part of our concert, we present a major work by Lambillotte, the Salut pour le Jour de Saint Sacrement. This ‘cantata’ in three movements seems to have been published about 1842. ‘Le Jour du Saint Sacrement’ is the French term for the feast now known as Corpus Christi. The texts of two of the motets were chosen for their praise of the Eucharist and the miracle of transubstantiation. The Marian antiphon, Salve Regina, was appropriate at any time of the church year. The second (perhaps) and third motets were performed in Shanghai under the direction of, François Ravary in the 1850s and 60s. The Salve Regina sets the antiphon written down in this form in the twelfth century at the Abbey of Cluny. Lambillotte’s score offers three possibilities: solo, with piano or organ, or four-part women’s, or four-part men’s voices with accompaniment. He did not consider a performance with solo and men’s and women’s voices, as this was not permitted in the liturgical choirs of his day. The operatic soprano solo undoubtedly precluded this as well. Dr. Urrows has tactfully rearranged the motet for soprano solo and mixed voices. - - Salve Regina, mater misericordiae: Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve. Ad te clamamus, exsules, filii Hevae. Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes In hac lacrimarum valle. Eia ergo, Advocata nostra, Illos tuos misericordes oculos Ad nos converte. Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, Nobis, post hoc exsilium ostende. O clemens: O pia: O dulcis Virgo Maria. Queen, mother of mercy: Our life, sweetness, and hope, hail. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you we sigh, mourning and weeping In this valley of tears. Turn then, our advocate, Those merciful eyes toward us. And Jesus, the blessed fruit of thy womb, After our exile, show us. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
