What do our bones do and how can we keep them healthy? As we age and our oestrogen levels decline our risk of developing brittle bones (osteopenia and ultimately osteoporosis) increase. This means we are at risk of fragility fractures - that is when a bone breaks when we fall from a standing height. Around 50% of women over the age of 50 will have a fracture and it may not sound like much but around 30% of those who have a hip replacement die within 12 months of the operation and 10% will die within 30 days. So, making sure our bones are in tip top shape is important and it's also possible! But there's more to bones than this. Bones are also important for blood cells production and research is showing bone also has a role in glucose metabolism and metabolic health. So there are more reasons to keep them healthy. In this session, Dr Reem Al-Shaikh, a menopause doctor talks about what can help with bone health and what can make our bones weaker, the role of certain medications including HRT and loads more. Have a listen!
