Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard has confirmed that she is stepping down after she lost a party vote on the leadership of the Labor Party. She was defeated by Kevin Rudd who won 57 votes to 45, in a leadership ballot of Labor lawmakers. The long and bitter rivalry between the two politicians might now come to an end as the former prime minister has said she will leave politics. "I will shortly leave from this parliament to see the governor-general on this matter. In accordance with the pledge I gave earlier today, I announce that I will not recontest the federal electorate of Lawler at the forthcoming federal election," Mrs Gillard said. Report by Sarah Kerr.
