Check out our full line of Industrial Hardware on our website: https://www.rspsupply.com/ What can cause a power surge? o Lightning strike is one of the most common  This can affect an electrical system even if the strike occurs miles from the electrical source  Conductors buried underground can still transmit the energy of the strike to electrical equipment located indoors  Lightning rods and other grounding equipment can help, but do not eliminate the risk posed by a lightning strike o Switching power  Switching equipment such as motors, transformers and other equipment can cause a sudden change in load, power loss, and disconnection of circuit breakers. This sudden switching can cause overvoltage leading to power surges.  The closer the switching occurs to our electrical system, the more threat it will pose to our equipment. o Other (Operations that a user will do that can cause surges) Typically have a very short duration  Things such as starting a motor  Opening circuit breakers  Welding equipment  Etc.  o Why is it important that we protect against transient surges?  When surges occur, our electrical systems can suffer and become damaged. In many cases the equipment can be very expensive and more importantly, can be vital to important operations such as: lifesaving equipment in a hospital, safety equipment at a chemical plant or refinery, or automation equipment in manufacturing facilities. By taking steps to prevent these surges from damaging this equipment, we can ensure that the operation of vital processes continue while also saving money by eliminating the need to replace equipment each time a surge occurs. o How can we stop these surges?  By using a Transient Surge Suppressor we can eliminate the problems associated with most transient surges.  It provides this protections by either blocking or shorting the voltage over its operating limit to ground protecting circuits downstream on the suppressor.  They are a very cost effective safety measure to protect potential valuable electrical equipment. o Where and when should we use surge supressors?  Anytime you want to protect electrical deveices. • Remember, it’s a low cost for a lot of protection  Where? • The best way to approach this is in tiers. o Tier 1 – Protection closest to the incoming power source. This is the main protection for a particular location o Tier 2 – In an area that will be protecting multiple devices that have branch protection (an electrical control panel would be an example of this type of application) o Tier 3 – Individual protection. In the case of an industrial control panel, this would be protection for each instrument entering the panel, or for the radio, etc.  It is important to make sure that we are matching the type of protection we need with the location and application we plan to use it in. We would not want to use tier 3 protection in a tier 1 application, and visa versa.
