Stunt legend Dean Smith! John Wayne's THE ALAMO was his BIG BREAK! From Olympic Gold to Hollywood!

Interview with Dean Smith (1/15/1932-6/24/2023). R.I.P. After setting records in college and winning an Olympic Gold Medal at the 1952 Helsinki Games for the 400-meter relay, Dean Smith wanted to be a stuntman and actor. Through hard work, talent and extraordinary ability, this Texas gentleman rose to the top of the stunt business. His innate likability and good manners didn't hurt either! Dean Smith not only worked with film greats, he doubled them, too! Robert Duvall, Michael Landon, Dale Robertson, Robert Redford and Dean even doubled one of his heroes, Roy Rogers! For McLINTOCK! Dean donned a red wig and a pair of bloomers to double Maureen O'Hara in that John Wayne classic, one of 10 John Wayne movies he made. Following his retirement, Dean returned to his ranch in Graham, Texas, with his wife, Debbie, and son Finis. For several years he hosted Celebrity Rodeos benefiting the Cowboy Cancer Crusade and the John Wayne Cancer Foundation. Among his many awards are a one from the Stuntman's Hall of Fame and a 1998 Golden Boot Award. His autobiography, "Cowboy Stuntman," written with Mike Cox, was published in 2013. This special episode of A WORD ON WESTERNS salutes Dean, who died June 24, 2023, at the age of 91, after a long battle with cancer. Recorded July 17, 2014, it's a look back at moments from his amazing career. Our condolences to his wife Debbie, son Finis, and all of his family, friends and fans. Rest in Peace, amigo.
