This video is for the chapter “I Was My Own Route” which is a poem by Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos (February 17, 1914 – July 6, 1953). The poet is known for her service as Secretary General of the Daughters of Freedom and has played a crucial role for the advocacy of Puerto Rican independence. Further, she gained global recognition for being a civil rights activist for African/Afro-Caribbean writers. The poem by Julia de Burgos presents the burdening of women with the patriarchal ideologies from the past. The poet urged all the women to come out of the past and locate their identity within. The idea of the poem is mainly based on the feminist ideas and stands against the social injustices. She demands for women to have equal rights and opportunities like the men have. She argues that the society has no right to determine the destiny or anything about her personal life.
