Restoring the Montgomery Ward GEN 3943 Stereo Cassette Player -- A Commissioned Project

A YouTube subscriber named Ken contacted ClydeSight Productions about his Montgomery Ward GEN 3943 Stereo Cassette Player -- a type of "walkman" -- which would not rewind or Fast Forward and commissioned us to repair it. This video is a record of the work and the results. Visit ClydeSight Productions at: http://www.clydesight.com The Montgomery Ward GEN 3943 Stereo Cassette Player was probably built in the early 1980's. As can be seen in this video, it uses a Chinese transport mechanism that had become popular at the time, in fact the entire machine was made in Taiwan. This is similar to other American brand machines (i.e. General Electric, RCA, even Radio Shack) which earlier had been made in Japan. Ken thought that the problem was perhaps due to belt deterioration, but as you will see in this video, the Montgomery Ward GEN 3943 Stereo Cassette Player had not only a belt problem, but the clutch gear mechanism for the Fast Forward and Rewind functions had developed a crack in its retaining collar, causing clutch failure.
