Should I Go To Medical School? (Answers from a Retired Psychiatrist)

If you've got heart in it, I say go for it! Join my newsletter (https://fightmastermd.com/newsletter) and get my FREE 'Fractured to Whole: 32 Truths I've Come to Know'. ABOUT RYAN FIGHTMASTER: I'm a board-certified psychiatrist that left medicine in the fall of 2022 to build a life I love and want. I write, surf, and refurbish furniture because... it's what I enjoy. I share my journey at FightmasterMD.com. I graduated medical school at the University of Oklahoma and psychiatry residency at the University of California, Irvine. I previously worked for HealthCorps, where I built a health program for high school students and appeared on the Dr. Oz show. CONTACT: You can get in touch with me via Instagram at   / fight_the_md   Transcript: I get asked one question more than any other: should I go to medical school? I’m honored, really, because for eight years while a med student and resident, all I wanted was to have that discussion. But… at the end of the day, my situation was different. How would I know the answer? At the end of the day, whether or not to go to medical school… or not.. is a difficult decision… inside a parade of difficult decisions in our lives. And making difficult decisions… is an art. So, instead of answering the “Should I go to med school question?”, let’s talk about how I’ve learned to make difficult decisions. Here’s what I know: 1. All paths are difficult, for different reasons. Even if one seems less stressful, it's usually not. There is no easy path. Ever. Anywhere. 2. Having heart in a choice is critical. Seeing some aspect of your soul in the choice is huge. This is where questions like, “What kind of life will I be proud to tell my kids about?” Are helpful. Trying to envision what kind of life you want in 10 years is helpful too. But, I know from experience that when the murkiness of indecision takes over, it’s hard to find heart and soul in the choice. The amygdala (fear) has taken charge. 3. Fear is my ally. Fear guides my arrow to the target. No matter where I'm at in the decision making process, no matter how murky the waters are, I always know which choice is more difficult, which choice I'm more scared of; the one where outcome is more uncertain. The one where I’m not so sure I can accomplish it. For me, that choice is often the right one. 4. Lastly, even though I try not to, it's been helpful to admit I do sometimes take the low road—the path of least resistance—which is a part of the process. I’m not perfect. I’m not superman. I fool myself. Each of those choices aren't dead-end decisions (medical school included) and have all informed the next big decision. It’s all gris for the mill. Take medical school for example. It was easier for me to go to medical school (MEDICAL SCHOOL!!!), than it was to chase my dreams. That's disturbing. I was scared less by an eight year, all-out grind of information and time, than I was of going after what I wanted.  The force that made that choice is what we’re battling during big decisions. Moral of today’s story: if you're dealing with a big decision, consider doing the harder thing (that hopefully has some heart in it). If you liked today’s video, hit subscribe. I also have a weekly free newsletter, where I talk about how my life’s going after quitting my job as a physician. You can subscribe via a link below.
