Middlesbrough Station is a busy hub on the Tees Valley Line, with nearby connections to the Durham Coast Line and Esk Valley Line. The station is managed by TransPennine Express, which provides through-services between Redcar Central and Manchester Airport. Northern Trains also operate hourly trains in each direction on the Durham Coast Line to Newcastle; and hourly trains in each direction to Nunthorpe, some of which continue on to Whitby. In recent years the amount of freight passing through Middlesbrough has reduced dramatically, but you can still see a decent selection travelling to the British Steel Lackenby works, where they produce beams for the construction industry, and Skinningrove works, where they produce speciality profiles including rail. The close proximity of Tees Dock means you also get quite a few intermodal trains rumbling by. From 13th December 2021 east coast operator LNER will be running a daily service between Middlesbrough and London Kings Cross. This has required some re-signalling and platform extension work. In today's video you'll see TransPennine Express class 185 "Desiro" DMUs and Northern Trains class 156 "Super Sprinter" and class 158 "Express Sprinter" DMUs. There is also a DB Cargo class 66 hauling a load of steel slabs from Scunthorpe to Lackenby.
