This song was inspired by the insane story of South Korean Director, Shin Sang-Ok and his wife Choi Eun-Hee’s experience in North Korea. Both of them were kidnapped by Kim Jong Il in 1978 and forced to develop North Korea’s cinema industry. To escape their captors, they devised a plot to make movies that were so good, Kim Jong Il would allow them to travel to international film festivals abroad. Thus, they created and released Pulgasari. Pulgasari takes place during the Goryeo Dynasty in medieval Korea. It tells the tale of a village that is being oppressed by its corrupted governor, who demands a ridiculous amount of iron from the villagers. The villagers in response hide iron weapons to form a rebellion. Finding out about this, the governor has an elderly blacksmith arrested and starved until he reveals where the weapons are hidden. Unwilling to talk, the villagers, including his daughter Ami, desperately try to feed him by tossing rice into his cell. Instead of eating the rice, he forges it into a little monster figure and prays to the gods of heaven and earth before promptly dying thereafter. When his body is recovered, Ami discovers the figurine and accidentally drops some of her blood on it while sewing. Pulgasari comes instantly to life, and that’s where the story begins.
