Morissette Amon Rise Up - vocal coach reacts

HI Guys! I’m Madeleine Harvey. I’m a vocal coach, and today, I am going to be reacting to Morissette Amon singing Rise Up Donations Welcome - https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted... Right away, the very first thing I notice here, is one of my favorite things to hear in singers voices. The presence of sibilance (that hissing that happens when a person says a word with an "s" sound). Sibilance is a great way to get vocal texture. It’s when you use the texture of the consonant to seduce the ear of your listener by bringing them into the vocal experience. It’s extremely romantic and effective for holding the attention of the listener. I’m also seeing her use a little jaw motion as she sings. This isn’t conducive of tension, it’s more consistent with her keeping an open space in the background of her vocals. This gives her an excellent tone quality. So if you’d like to sing like Morissette Amon, to sing high and learn how to sing with a great tone, you could model her style. In terms of Morisette Amon's style, I’m hearing the presence of Inalare la voce. It means to inhale the voice. It doesn’t mean that you inhale and sing simultaneously, it’s more of a metaphorical representation of the preparation of the voice. In order to feel the preparation of the sound, notice how the vocal tract widens when you inhale - like a yawn. Notice also how the vocal tract remains open on the exhale. This is a great way to sing with a better tone, as well as how to get rid of the break. Keeping the space gently widened in the back elevates the tendency for the muscles to constrict or to clamp down on the voice due to the demands of the song. Inalare la voce is a great way to learn to sing without tension or strain. Morissette Amon is such a beautiful example of hearing both the presence of technique and the awesome rapture of performance. She has already done the work with the technique and is allowing it to be a supportive function in her singing Rise Up, but without having it pull away from the honesty of her performance. This allows her to appreciate the value of her own emotional experience. Morisette understands that if she allows herself to lean into her emotions, she becomes transformed by her own experience. And in turn, so do we. It’s the amazing power of performance art. It has the power to change us in the listening to this song Rise Up and similar songs.
