It could be said that some of what I say here could be applied to points equipped machines, and it is vital to have an auto advance mechanism with the correct range [several were available] for a particular model - as well as the correct rotation. That said, with a points system it is easier to find the precise moment when a spark occurs, than with an electronic system, where we are usually just given a static point of engine rotation - usually TDC - where a rotor magnet can be set at a prescribed position where the engine will run - but what about the full advance timing? It might be right, but it is possible it might not, as discussed here, and knowing the correct fully advanced timing position and being able to confirm it by strobe testing may be the only way to be certain for a given model and it's requirements.
