Understanding Fantasy: The Tough Guide to Fantasy Land by Diana Wynne Jones

When we talk about understanding the genre of Fantasy there are certain texts that create tropes, subvert them, or show how the genre evolves. There are a few, however, that do something different. Diana Wynne Jones' The Tough Guide to Fantasy Land is one of those. A parody of a guide book, it lampoons fantasy tropes with insight, wit, and a wicked sense of humour. Possibly better known for her novels, such as The Howl Trilogy (Howl's Moving Castle probably the most famous due to the anime adaptation), it was her Tough Guide to Fantasy Land that really impacted my knowledge and understanding of the genre. This is just a short video talking about the book, what it is, and how it helps us understand Fantasy.
