Host Richard Goodwin continues his journey through France with a trip around Avignon. The famous bridge in Avignon, St Benezet's bridge still has four of the original arches left. In 1989 Unesco designated Avignon a world heritage site. Avignon has 147 historic sites. Michel Pointelin, is quite of one of the most interesting characters in this entire series. He is a restorer of furniture of the first order as you see from his clear explanation as to how he goes about his skilful trade. He shows us how to take apart an antique commode which has been constructed entirely with wooden pegs (no nails). Apparently in the old days furniture was sometimes dismantled so that it could be more easily transported when the owner moved. He complains that this commode has been badly restored a long time ago because nails have been used which is strictly forbidden in correct restoration work. Michel Pointelin is astonishingly knowledgeable about his craft and well worth watching and listening to. The workshop of Francois Bronze is not far away. Francois repairs mostly brass decorations and is very skillful at it. He opens his workshop to the public. He shows us an Italian chandelier with crystal drops and how he will repair it. Mouret the hat shop is an interesting stop because it is the only hat shop which designated as an historic monument. I try on some of the local hats instructed by a charming shop assistant. I then visit an establishment that makes bead curtains and we are shown how to do it. They are remarkably popular in the house of the area in the summer because they stop flies entering the house. My last visit in this episode to another really remarkable character who is called Francois Morenas. He has started projection films on a bed sheet of his mother. He would ride around with his little projector on a trailer behind his bicycle. He has many amusing stories about his many adventures. Now he has his own cinema where he runs rare films amidst his collection of old cinema posters. He really is a living monument to the 7th art.
