The Films of Luchino Visconti

A tribute montage to one of the greatest Italian Directors, Luchino Visconti. Luchino Visconti's films are among the most stylistically and intellectually influential of postwar Italian cinema. An aristocrat by birth and a Marxist by inclination, Italian filmmaker Count Don Luchino Visconti di Modrone (1906-1976) is known for both his contributions to Neorealism and his frank aestheticism. His first film, Ossessione , Loosely based from James M.Cain's novella, is one of the masterpieces of neorealist cinema. In the film self-destructive sexual passions are played out against a landscape of extraordinary beauty. The documentary style La terra trema describing the lives of peasants in a Sicilian fishing village, is also considered one of the greatest neorealist films. A favorite theme was the tension between family solidarity and the destructive power of family relationships, Best expressed in Rocco and His brothers and The Damned. Visconti's first film in color, Senso, brilliantly portraying political and sexual conflicts during the Austro-Italian War of 1866, displayed the attention to detail and love for period reconstructions that would become his hallmarks in The Leopard, The Stranger, Death in Venice and The Innocent.
