Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery in the Adult Population

Betemariam Sharew, BA; Ricard Corcelles, MD; and Yael Mauer, MD, MPH; from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH, share insights from their Review article appearing in the October 2024 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings where they found bariatric surgery to be a safe and successful option for the treatment of patients with obesity and provide a summary of the evidence and guidelines. They note new guidelines have expanded the eligibility criteria for patients with lower obesity thresholds, and the surgical outcomes have significant benefits for reduction of obesity and its comorbidities as well as for improved mortality. Despite its increased benefits and relatively low risk, they find bariatric and metabolic surgery is underutilized. Ms Sharew, and Dr. Mauer and Dr. Corcelles, recommend clinicians become more familiar with the supportive data for this treatment so they can better counsel their patients.
