Strong, Handsome but Ponderous Constrictor Variation Knot? The Ashley Book Of Knots 1944| ABOK 1201

@KnotHobbyist This video demonstrates how to tie a Handsome but 'Ponderous' Strong knot from The Ashley Book Of Knots, 1944, ABOK 1201 which demonstrates how to tie the knot for a fencing post for a decorative purpose. This knot is made of 4 passes around the object and it proceeds one step further than the Snuggle Hitch & Double Constrictor and forms a double infinity loop or double 8 loop around the object. It has a common factor like other constrictor knot variations like Constrictor, ABOK 1249, Double Constrictor ABOK 1252 & Constrictor Variant, ABOK 1253 that the working end in the final step is tucked under the first turn and it exists perpendicular to the object & parallel to the standing end. Its structure comes close to the boa knot or boa constrictor knot which according to Wikipedia was discovered by Peter Collingwood in 1996 but it is more elegant in appearance. This can also be tied in the bight though it has to be dressed meticulously. It fits the definition of a hitch as it needs the object to retain its shape. The knot can be untied when not under tension with some difficulty by pulling up the bight of the first turn/here 3rd strand from left, which applies to other constrictors also. The Ashley Book Of Knots, 1944, ABOK 1201 states "Although handsome, this knot is somewhat ponderous and I would hesitate to recommend it for anything less than a meeting of the Garden Club itself. The purpose of the knot under the circumstances would be to provide roped-off areas so that guests might be spared the embarrassment of trampling on the flower beds. First tie a CLOVE HITCH and arrange the turns as in the left diagram, continue as in the right diagram and complete as shown in the center." For demonstration purposes, I have used 8mm climbing rope which has polyester sheath in the video. Before trying this or any knot anywhere for critical applications, always take expert advice. Also mastering the tying & dressing of any knot through practice is important to ensure the optimum performance of the knot. It is best to test knots in a non-critical scenario before graduating to critical scenarios.
