Periodic Maintenance Service | Thaksha Hegde

Periodic Maintenance Services Generally for premium segment vehicles like this Mercedes GLA the periodic maintenance service interval is 15000 km or one year whichever is earlier. In case of this particular vehicle, it hasn’t clocked 15000km interval yet however one year is completed since the last service. We have the car on the service ramp and we will begin the periodic maintenance service. Will check the steering components like the ball joints, the rack end and tie rod ends. We are checking for any undesirable play or wear of these components. Next up we are checking the wheel bearings by rolling the wheels, checking if there is any undesirable vibration. We will check the brake pad thickness and confirm if its above the minimum requirement, confirm that the brake discs are in good condition. I have this brake pad set in my hands and the thickness is about 7 to 8mm which is sufficient.) We can just clean this & use these brake pads but you can see there is corrosion on this disc. So as you can see we have cleaned the brakes right now, the corrosive layer is now all cleaned up, the brake pads are cleaned and everything has been fitted back in place. The same process will be repeated for the rest of the three wheels. This car has brake disc system on all 4 wheels so the same process of brake inspection and cleaning will be carried out. Now let’s check the brake fluid condition and the level. The fluid is in good condition. The level should be at the “max” indicator as shown here. Next we will check the engine coolant condition and its level and if required we will top-it off. The coolant is in good condition and the level is correct too. Now we check the condition of the engine air filter. If it’s very bad then we replace it, else clean it up thoroughly and re-use it. As can be seen the engine air filter is in good condition. It isn’t bad, there is no dirt, dust and hence it can be reused by just cleaning it. So, now we are going to inspect the suspension system of this vehicle. This vehicle has a Macpherson strut suspension system. As you can see this is the strut or the shock absorber. Here you can see the control arms or the lower arms, then the stabilizer linkages or the torsion rod linkages. This is the balance rod which is also called the torsion bar. So, I am inspecting the rear suspension system right now, this vehicle has the four link suspension system. There is a telescopic shock absorber over here, this is the coil spring, these are the four link or the lower arms, stabilizer linkage and stabilizer rod. We will now re-torque all the suspension components and confirm that there is no leakage in the shock absorbers and those are good. So now we will be draining out the used engine oil. After that we will fix the drain nut again and after replacing the oil filter on top, put in new engine oil. As you can see the oil appears darker although it hasn’t completed 15000 km, usually on diesel engines the oil becomes black fairly quick. The oil filter is being replaced with a brand new one. Note that the O-rings should also be replaced with new ones. This white colour main O-ring and also these two on the top. So, now we are replacing the engine oil. The recommended engine oil is 5w40 which is fully synthetic. Let’s check the engine oil dip-stick and confirm the level of oil. As can be seen it is at the max level. Now that we have completed the routine service, we will go ahead and do the scanning of the onboard computer of the car. We use this diagnostic scanner which connects to the OBD which is the Onboard Diagnosis port of the car through this 16-pin connector. So, now that we have completed the scanning, you can see that there are no error codes stored in any of the control units. There are no fault codes stored in the onboard computer of this car. As can be seen, the number of errors or fault codes is zero. The ABS unit, the ECM, the parking brake control module, the airbag control module, the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system module, and the instrumentation lighting control module all are scanned, checked and free of fault codes. So this car is scanned and is all good. All these premium segment cars have a feature where the service reminder is displayed on the cluster meter or it will pop up on the infotainment screen over here. It will show how many kilometres or days the service is due. I have “reset” the service reminder here and now it is showing that the B2 service is due in 364 days. If the service interval has passed then the message displayed will be service overdue since 364 days or 12 days or 30 days or such. Remember, periodic maintenance service is very important for keeping your car in the best shape and should be done routinely as per the prescribed service interval given by the manufacturer.
