This braised tofu dish with vegetables is a popular, traditional Chinese dish, both at restaurants and in Chinese households. It is a naturally meatless recipe and it can be made completely vegetarian by using Lee Kum kee's vegetarian mushroom sauce instead of regular oyster sauce. Ingredients 1. Firm Tofu 2. Chinese Cabbage (150g-200g) 3. Carrot (100g) 4. Baby Corn (100g) 5. 2 Spring Onion 6. Light Soy Sauce (2 tbsp) 7. Oyster or Mushroom Sauce (2 tbsp) 8. Shaoxing Rice Wine (1 tbsp) 9. Seasame Oil (1 tbsp) 10. Sugar (1 tsp) 11. Salt (½ tsp) 12. White Pepper (½ tsp) Braising is a great way to cook tofu! The reason is that tofu can be a bit bland and braising it is an excellent way to give it flavour. Braised tofu with vegetables is a popular Chinese meatless dish and it makes for a good side dish or an alternative to a meat dish. To make it completely vegetarian, you need to substitute regular oyster sauce for mushroom vegetarian stir-fry sauce (which is sometimes referred to as vegetarian oyster sauce) which is widely available from Oriental Supermarkets and online and other stores. Disappointingly, it is not yet available from the major local supermarkets and they are somewhat letting down the vegetarian community! The best thing about this dish is that it is a great way of using any leftover vegetables - so long as they can keep their texture after 15 to 20 minutes of braising.
