On April 24th, 2015, Sabeen Mahmud, the Pakistani cultural icon and activist, was shot in a targeted assassination in Karachi. This sent shockwaves through the city, especially the culture and arts community, many of whom had found their voice at T2F, the unique café-arts space she founded. People throughout Pakistan who had looked up to Sabeen, were inspired to continue her legacy through different initiatives. Joy of Urdu is one such organization. In 2020, on the 5th anniversary of this tragedy, we had planned a worldwide festival "Carpe Diem: Celebrating Sabeen" to celebrate the life and legacy of this extraordinary human being through a series of events in our worldwide chapters. To kick off this series, Joy of Urdu Dubai Chapter had organized a major event at Alserkal Avenue, the arts and design hub, involving film, panel discussions, music, poetry, and performances. A German filmmaker Schokofeh Kamiz, had met Mahenaz Mahmud, Sabeen’s mother, at the Dil Phaink exhibition at Southbank Centre, London, a few weeks after the tragedy. "After Sabeen" is a documentary film that follows some of Sabeen’s family and friends, documenting the aftermath. Mahenaz Mahmud, Sabeen’s mother, was to fly in to Dubai as one of the panelists of the discussion. The event was postponed due to the lockdown. (Scroll down for text and translation) ________________ ‎ We ran this popular #socialdistancing campaign, #GharBethiyeKitabeinParhiye asking you to stay indoors: read and acquaint yourself with the wealth of Urdu literature at our disposal (if you are privileged to be able to do that). We received scores of selfie videos from all ages, countries, and walks of life, and even celebrities! People read excerpts, recited poetry, some sang, including a Bollywood singer! From children in Grade 2, to retirees; and from 40 cities around the world, from countries such as Pakistan, Russia, US, Canada, UK, UAE, and across the border, from India! Joy of Urdu shared a total of 193 videos, from 40 cities, 10 countries, covering over 104 authors, including 15 people who read their own work. We had 22 videos for and by kids.
