Deadly venomous coral snakes (Micrurus) from Costa Rica, mimicry, red touches yellow, false coral

Deadly venomous coral snakes are famous for their bright colors. They are also the most venomous snakes of America, both North America and South America. This video shows 2 species of coral snakes from Costa Rica, Costa Rican coral snake (Micrurus mosquitensis) and Central American coral snake (Micrurus nigrocinctus). Coral snakes are elapids and have potent neurotoxic venom. They are related to cobras, mambas or kraits. There are many mimics of coral snakes in Latin America, one is also in this video - Cope's false coral snake (Pliocercus euryzonus). When a harmless species mimics a dangerous one, it is called Batesian mimicry. Many people think that coral snakes are easy to identify by 'Red touches black, safe for Jack. Red touches yellow, kills a fellow'. However, it is not true and one should not touch any banded snake in Latin America without good knowledge of snake species in the area. In this video we show 2 coral snakes with typical black-yellow-red scheme, but there are many lacking one of these colors.
